Ferdinand I De Braekeleer (1792-1883) Ferdinand de Braekeleer the Elder was born in Antwerp and studied at the local Academy of Fine Arts. In 1813 he exhibited at the Salon de Paris. He painted history pieces, genre scenes, religious subjects, landscapes, and portraits. In addition, he worked as an etcher. He became known particularly for the documentation of historical events after the Belgian Revolution of 1830. His sons Ferdinand and Henri were also painters.
