Oil on canvas, relined Germany, around 1900 Karl Stuhlmüller (1859 – 1930) – German genre and animal painter of the Munich School Signed and inscribed lower right 'K. Stuhlmüller München' Dimensions: 19 x 40.5 cm Gilt wooden frame: 27 x 48 cm Provenance: Private property, Berlin The painting shows how the artist creates a connection between his favored animal paintings and the presentation of daily scenes bringing out a dynamic and vivid setting which is characterized by the richness of details – and that´s why Stuhlmüllers market paintings are so popular! Condition: The painting is in good condition consistent with the age. The varnish is darkened, especially in the upper left side of the painting, and over all tiny craquelé can be seen on the canvas. Several small marks can be found and there are areas with rubbing due to the frame along the edges and corners. The frame shows traces of usage as scuffing and rubbing. The dimensions are 19 x 40.5 cm, the frame measures 27 x 48 cm. Karl Stuhlmüller (1859 – 1930) The german genre and animal painter Karl Stuhlmüller was part of the Munich School and is especially known for his images of animal markets and winter scenery. Stuhlmüller was a pupil of Carl Theodor von Piloty and graduated from the academy of arts in Munich. The city was an important art capital around the turn of the century. The artist’s way of painting is considered to be naturalistic: As a painter Stuhlmüller was guided by reality concerning the depiction of perspective, physicality and color. At the end of the century his work shows an advance towards the manner of painting of impressionism and outdoor painting. Stuhlmüllers oeuvre is characterized by his painting skills, his sensible perception and the presentation of daily scenes in a dynamic way and rich in detail.
