Willy Robert Huth (1890-1977) From 1904 to 1906, the Erfurt born Willi Robert Huth studied at the local School of Applied Arts. Afterwards, he was an apprentice of the Stuttgart based court painter Paul Kämmerer for three years. In 1910, he attended the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts and worked in the architectural office of Wilhelm Kreis. From 1919, he was a freelance artist in Berlin. In 1919, Huth was co-founder of the Expressionist group ‘Jung Erfurt’, and a year later he took part in an exhibition of the Freie Sezession. Three years later, he was represented at the first exhibition of German Expressionism in America. In 1928, Huth joined the Berlin Secession, and in 1929 the Deutsche Künstlerbund. In 1937, he was banned from exhibiting by the Nazis. During the war, his Berlin studio along with all his works were destroyed. In 1946, Huth worked as a professor at the Academy of Applied Arts in Berlin-Weissensee. From 1947 to 1957, he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. In 1949, he founded the ‚Berliner Neue Gruppe‘ along with Karl Hofer, Max Pechstein, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff,. Huth spent his summers on the island of Amrum, where he died in 1977.
