Samuel Lancaster Gerry American, 1813-1891 In the Valley of Chamounix (From Nature) Signed indistinctly ...G; signed S. L. Gerry and inscribed In the Valley of Chamounix / from nature on the reverse Oil on prepared board 6 x 10 inches Samuel Gerry traveled abroad on three occasions, the longest being a sojourn from 1837 to 1849, during which he visited England, France, Switzerland and Italy. These trips would have a lasting influence on the self-taught artist, who, along with other American painters, was inspired by the beauty of the Swiss Alps. Gerry showed Swiss landscapes at the 1851 exhibition of the New England Art Union, and at the Boston Art Club in 1876. The Indiana University Art Museum includes in its permanent collection an Alpine landscape dating from Gerry's second European visit in the early 1850s.
