Oil on canvas, relined to the edges Vincenzo Cabianca (1827-1902) – Italian painter and member of the artists group Macchiaioli Signed and dated 'Cabianca 1856(?)' lower central Dimensions: 59.8 x 68.8 cm Provenance: Private collection, Argentina Rocky diagonal arranged landscape between light and shadow, its protagonist glances melancholically over the vast see – genre painting made by the Macchiaioli painter Vincenzo Cabianca, who belonged to the reformers of art in Florence and Rome since the mid-19th century. Condition: The painting is in good condition consistent with the age. The varnish has been darkened and there is tiny craquelure overall. Edges and corners shows rubbed spots in some places and a hole can be seen in the canvas (rocks) on the left side. Several retouched and restored spots can be seen under UV light mainly affecting the sky. Vincenzo Cabianca (1827-1902) Vincenzo Cabianca, an Italian painter, born in Verona, was a protagonist of the artists group Macchiaioli. This union of Italian artists turned against tradition and academicism around the middle of the 19th century and supported a freer view of art (such as the French Barbizon painters). Cabianca studied primarily at the academies in Verona and Venice, before he came to Florence, where he soon joined up with the Macchiaioli circle. Representative for the artist´s oeuvre are mainly his landscapes and genre paintings: Cabianca captured the essential of the scenes empathetically, painted directly in front of the landscape (painting en plein air) and experimented with colors and light.
