Petrov Dimensions: 36 x27.2 cm In a splendid, carved and gilt frame: 64.5 x 75.5 cm Provenance: Private collection, Poland Scene with Ligia and Vicinius, the main characters from the novel “Quo Vadis” by Henryk Szienkiewicz. A painting with a similar scene and the same title, dated 1900, is in the collection of the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg. Bakalowicz's sense for accurately composition and for sublime illumination – in this painting the couple stands in a patio illuminated indirected – was highly appreciated among his collectors, who compared him with the famous English painter Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Condition: The painting is in an good condition, consistent with age. It shows partially fine craquelure. The inspection under UV light reveals some minor retouching on the edges and in the vestment of Ligia and in the upper part of the architecture in the background and the architecture of the fountain.
