Provenance: Anonymous sale; Christie’s, London, 16 April 1999, lot 67. We are most grateful to Jan van Helmont for identifying the coat-of-arms and the sitter. Maria Godijn was the widow of Pierre le Mesureur, chaplain of Antwerp and merchant. The couple was influential in Antwerp and did business with the famous publisher and intellectual Christophe Plantijn (c.1520-1589). Maria Godijn's inventory is published in Erik Duverger's Antwerpse kunstinventarissen uit de zeventiende eeuw, which lists two portraits of the deceased and the late Peter le Mesureur in 'de groote Neercamer' (the large lower chamber).
