Inspired by the works of artists such as Sudjono, Matisse, Chagall and Bosch, Arifien’s style of painting is rich with characters and highly distinctive. His experience in interior design is exemplified in his paintings by the way he arranges the objects and space. His home, Rumah Chandari in Jakarta is built on a 400 square metres land using naturally collapsed trees. The eldest son of eleven siblings, Arifien Neif has been interested in art at a young age. After completing high school in Surabaya, Arifien could not afford to pursue formal art education. As a self-taught artist, he regularly participated in many art competitions and won. Arifien decided to become a fulltime artist in 1980. His solo exhibitions were held in 1989, 1990, 1997 in Jakarta and in Singapore in 1999. In 2008, he held his second solo show in Singapore titled Fine Romance at the National Museum of Singapore. In 2013, Zola Zolu Gallery published a book called Arifien Neif - Wonderful World: Theater Of Life written by Jean Couteau and edited by Sherry Kasman.
