Willard J. Page (1885-1958), untitled oil on board, ca. 1930s to 1940s. Willard Page's favorite Southwest subjects included adobe buildings and villages, desert landscapes with native flora, and the Catalina and Superstition Mountains. This painting, signed by the artist at the lower right, depicts a majestic mountain range with desert plants in the foreground, and pastel hued skies overhead, suggesting the scene takes place at either sunrise or sunset. A picturesque moment captured by this American artist. Size: 16" W x 9" H (40.6 cm x 22.9 cm); 17.25" W x 10.25" H (43.8 cm x 26 cm) including frame. Willard J. Page was born in Kansas City in 1885 and became an itinerant artist of the American West in the early twentieth century. For a time he based his studio in Boulder and traveled about the West painting colorful intimate-scaled landscapes, capturing majestic views of the dramatic Rockies that were popular with tourists. As his wife Ethel's health declined, the couple moved to Arizona, where they camped in the warmer climate and Willard painted.
