The painting is signed lower right.Franciscus Willem ('Frans') Helfferich (The Hague, September 2, 1871 - there, November 6, 1941) was a Dutch painter. He worked in the style of the Hague School, later with strong influences from Impressionism. Life and work Helfferich studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. He would also live and work in The Hague for most of his life, although he spent some time in Delft between 1896 and 1900. He also often worked 'en plein air' in the hills of southern Limburg. Helfferich initially worked mainly in the style of The Hague School and mainly painted landscapes. Furthermore, he was strongly influenced by Jacob Maris, whose work he also copied. Later he used a looser brush and made many 'frivolous' impressionistic representations of modern city life in the court city. His later landscapes show features of neo-impressionism. Helfferich was a member of the Hague Art Circle and worked for many years as a professor at the Hague Art Academy. Criticism in his time had great difficulties with his "wild" style and the use of color. Today, his auction works often fetch better prices than those of his colleague Floris Arntzenius, who was then of a higher class, who also painted many scenes from the city of The Hague. Helfferich died in 1941 at the age of 70. This artwork is coming from estate sale in Europe. We are offering mainly the artwork. The frame is included for free. Shipping will be paid by the buyer.
