Pericle Capidan (1869, Prilep, Macedonia - 1966, Cluj) The Grape Merchant (1900) oil on canvas; signed lower right, in blue: P. Capidan; dated and located lower right in brown: Paris 1900 81x 65 cm Pericle Capidan studied painting at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris with Aman, Tătărescu, G.D.Mirea, Nikolaus Gysis, Karl Maar and Leon Bonnat as teachers. He participated in the Official Salon of Paris (1898 - 1901) receiving an honorable mention in 1901. Since 1905 he has been present in the simes of Artistic Youth and after 1919 he settled in Cluj, first as a teacher at Gheorghe Barițiu High School and later (1958) at the School of Fine Arts. Stylistically, he went from Bavarian academism to symbolism, then to a chromatic exuberance that places him among the important colorists in Romanian art. (MD)
