Willard J. Page (American, 1885-1958), oil on board, "Catalina Mountains, Tucson, Arizona", ca. 1930s to 1940s CE. Monogrammed on the lower left in black. A beautiful landscape painting that captures the marvelous colors and light of the American West centering on the Catalina Mountains. Willard Page was born in Kansas City in the late 19th century and became an itinerant artist of the American West in the early 20th century. Early in his career he set up a studio in Boulder, Colorado as his home base and traveled around the West - to Arizona, California, Kansas, as well as throughout Colorado - in search of inspiring landscapes with majestic views. In later years, when his wife Ethel's health declined, the couple moved to Arizona where he set up studios in Catalina and the Superstition Mountains of Arizona. Compositions like this one captured the beautiful desert cacti plants bathed by the rosy hues of warm western sunsets.
