John Breck (1860-1899) American, "Portrait of Study" of his brother Edward Breck. Partial original exhibition label verso. Signed on the stretcher. Beginning in 1886, Breck studied at the Academie Julian in Paris, and soon became one of the original settlers of the important Impressionist art colony in Giverny, France. Breck's achievements as an American artist constituted some of the earliest fully realized impressionistic paintings in this country. His works influenced the positive movement of Impressionism that occurred in the Boston area in the late 1880s and 1890s.Overall Size: 38 1/2 x 35 3/4 in.Sight Size: 32 3/4 x 29 3/4 in.
