CLAAS HENDRIK MEINERS (Amsterdam, 1819 - Arnhem, 1894). "Landscape and Houses by the Lake", 1873. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 73 x 105 cm; 94 x 128 cm (frame). It is probable that this spot identifies a small village near the wooded area around Oosterbeek, an enclave that the Dutch painter Claas Hendrik Meiners painted on several occasions. Charming houses with moss-covered gabled roofs are sheltered by the leafy trees bordering a peaceful lake. The painter Claas Hendrik Meiners belongs to the Oosterbeek School. Trained in BC Koekkoek, he travelled regularly to the south of Veluwezoom from 1853 onwards. There he joined a group of painters who made the landscape of Wolfeze and Oosterbeek the subject of their paintings. In contrast to the vast landscapes of the Romantic painters, Meiners opted for the intimate atmosphere of the forest, working on the atmospheric impression.
