Sidney Valentine Gardner,  British 1869-1957-  St Michael's Bridge, St Albans;  oil on board, signed 'Sid Gardner' (lower right), 25.2 x 35.5 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Gardner's oeuvre consists almost entirely of landscapes, invariably depicting a peaceful and idyllic countryside. The present work is a preparatory study for one of a series of postcards produced by Gardner, taken in the early 20th century, and depicting the sights of the historic Hertfordshire town of St Albans. In this instance, he illustrates St Michael's Bridge, which crosses the River Ver.
