JIMMY DONEGAN YANYATJARI 1940 - 2022 Papa Tjukurrpa, 2011 acrylic on linen 91 x 45.5 cm; 93.5 x 48 cm (framed) PROVENANCE Ninuku Arts, SA Cat No. NKJM11390 Private collection, Vic Private collection, NSW Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Ninuku Arts This powerful work by senior Pitjantjatjara artist Jimmy Donegan Yanyatjari tells the story of Papa Tjukurrpa — the Dingo Dreaming — associated with his father's Country around Dulu, a rockhole in the remote western desert. "Ngayuku mamaku ngura Dulu" — "My father's country is Dulu," Donegan explains. In this sacred place, ancestral dingoes — both men and women — live, hunt, and dig for water. Their activities are tied to Pilantjara, another nearby rockhole, forming a vital network of water sources across the desert. The story passed down through generations carries deep cultural and ceremonial significance. The marks and forms in the painting reflect papa walka — dog design — visual patterns that evoke the movement, behaviour, and tracks of the ancestral dingoes as they journeyed through this landscape. Donegan, a founding artist of Ninuku Arts, is known for his richly layered storytelling and masterful use of vibrant colour and rhythm. Here, he honours the living spirit of Country and the continuity of his father's Law, evoking the presence of Papa Tjukurrpa through bold painterly expression. © JIMMY DONEGAN / Copyright Agency, 2025
