Before turning to painting, he was renowned as a Ngankari (traditional healer) and a highly skilled carver of men's ceremonial implements. This painting depicts the Emu Dreaming (Kalaya Tjukurpa) associated with his Country at Kanpi. The Emu was Jimmy's totemic ancestor. The story tells of the Emus who travelled a great distance to reach this site, where they drank deeply before moving on. Here they fed on mistletoe berries, caterpillars, native cress, and other bush foods. In this work, Jimmy shows the Emus' camps and the waterholes they visited, as well as their travelling tracks across Country. Kanpi is also a significant site for the Piltati Tjukurpa (Water Serpent Dreaming), which tells of two ancestral couples who were transformed into serpents, embedding the place with deep spiritual resonance. @ JIMMY BAKER / Copyright Agency, 2025
