GLORIA TAMERRE PETYARRE 1942 - 2021 Awelye, 1995 acrylic on canvas 190 x 56 cm label adhered verso: Utopia Art Sydney inscribed Gloria Petyarre, exhb On The Line, 1995, Untitled, #5 PROVENANCE Utopia Art Sydney, NSW Private collection, NSW EXHIBITED Gloria Petyarre: On the Line, Utopia Art Sydney, Sydney, NSW, 1995 Gloria Petyarre's Awelye paintings are grounded in the women's ceremonial traditions of her Anmatyerre Country at Utopia, north-east of Alice Springs. The bold linear patterns that flow across the canvas reference the body paint designs applied during women's ceremonies. Before the ritual begins, the women coat their bodies with animal fat, tracing these designs across their breasts, arms, and thighs while singing the songs that accompany each stage of the ceremony. The rhythmic, interwoven lines in Awelye echo the gestures of these ancient practices, movements of care, connection, and continuity. The accompanying songs speak to the Dreaming stories of the ancestors and to the natural world: the plants, animals, and forces that sustain life. For Petyarre, Awelye is both subject and process, a celebration of women's strength, law, and custodianship. Through her dynamic brushwork and confident composition, she translates ceremonial rhythm into a visual language that honours the spiritual and communal heart of Anmatyerre culture. @ GLORIA TAMERRE PETYARRE / Copyright Agency, 2025
