The three roundels anchor the composition as the water source itself, one of the dependable places where water collects after rain, while the long, parallel lines describe the surrounding sandhills (tali), their ridges shifting with wind and season. Read from above, the painting becomes a clear map of how Country is organised: water at the centre, dunes folding around it. The story belongs to women. At Pinpirri, groups of women gathered to sing and dance the songs for this site, keeping law and memory active, and to collect bush foods, berries and seeds found in the swales between the dunes. Tatali Napurrula keeps to what can be shared publicly: the rockhole, the dune country, and the actions of ceremony and gathering, while deeper cultural detail remains with custodians. Her pared-back language gives the work its calm strength. The oval's weight draws the eye, then the rhythm of the sandhills carries it outward, as if walking the Country from water to high ground and back again. Areas of denser marking suggest places of activity; more open passages let the viewer travel across the surface. In this restrained design, place, practice and sustenance are held together as enduring record of women's ceremony and the everyday work of caring for Country. @ TATALI NAPURRULA / Copyright Agency, 2025
