BILLY STOCKMAN TJAPALTJARRI 1927 - 2015 Man's Story at Ilpitirri (Napperby Lakes), 1981 acrylic on linen 160 x 125.5 cm; 162.5 x 128 cm (framed) bears inscription verso: BS810129 PROVENANCE Papunya Tula Artists, NT Cat No. BS810129 Private collection, Vic accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Papunya Tula Artists Billy Stockman Tjapaltjarri was born at Ilbudirri, a large natural depression that fills with water during the rainy season, forming a vast ephemeral swamp at the junction of Napperby, Central Mount Wedge, and Narwietooma Stations. This important site, where Napperby Creek fans out across the desert plain, is associated with ceremonial responsibilities of men. The Dreamings connected to Ilbudirri celebrate Men's Law and the transmission of cultural knowledge across generations. The artist described this work as a Man's Dreaming, a statement of identity, authority, and continuity. It depicts men of the Tjapaltjarri and Tjungurrayi kinship groups conferring over the sacred arrangements of the initiation ceremonies that transform boys into men. The structured repetition of motifs reflect the movement of participants, the gathering of elders, and the sacred geometry of the site itself. More than a depiction of ceremony, this work functions as a visual reaffirmation of Men's Law, a celebration of kinship, place, and continuity. @ BILLY STOCKMAN TJAPALTJARRI / Copyright Agency, 2025
