Cole NA 1942" 14 x 10.25 inches (35.5 x 26cm), overall including frame 18.75 x 15 inches (47.6 x 38.1cm) Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, Alphaeus Cole was a portraitist and still life painter, teacher, illustrator and writer.  His preferred media were oil and watercolor.  His father was Timothy Cole, noted wood engraver. He was friends with John Singer Sargent and William Meritt Chase. He studied in Paris at the Academie Julian and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts.
