ROBERT, Nicolas (French, 1614-1685). Rhododendron Maximum (known as Rosebay, Great Rhodedendron, or White Laurel). Watercolor and gouache, within gold framing lines, on prepared vellum; bears numbering, in black chalk, lower right: "199". 16" by 13" vellum, 20" x 16" framed. Provenance: Sale, Monaco, Sotheby’s, ‘The Marcel Jeanson Collection’, 16 June 1988. It is native to North America from Ontario and Nova Scotia south to Ohio, Alabama, and Georgia, with a concentration of plants in the southern Appalachian Mountains.
