Balaam the Prophet Bowing to the Angel. Oval painted panel depicting the biblical episode of Balaam confronting the Angel, a dramatic scene drawn from Numbers chapters 22–24 in which Balaam is stopped on the road by a divine messenger and warned not to curse the Jewish people, whom God has blessed. The composition shows the angel with a drawn sword confronting Balaam, who falls prostrate, while his donkey recoils and accompanying figures gesture in alarm. A French inscription at lower right reads "Balaam prosterné aux pieds de l’Ange, Nombres ch. 22, 23 et 24," identifying the subject and scriptural source.The panel shows surface wear, edge losses, and areas of paint cracking and flaking consistent with age.
