ITALIAN, PROBABLY NORTHERN ITALIAN (LOMBARDY OR VENETO), PROBABLY EARLY 16TH CENTURY. MADONNA AND CHILD Oil on wood panel on cardboard. 30.5 x 26.5 cm (R. 48 x 43 cm). Partially minimal old restoration, partially minimal retouching. Frame. Half-length depiction of the Madonna with the Christ Child in intimate, close physical contact. Mary bows her head towards the child, whom she tenderly presses to her cheek; the motif of Maria lactans is subtly suggested. The architectural background with classicist pilasters refers to the formal vocabulary of the High Renaissance. The softly modelled flesh tones, the warm colouring and the finely worked curls of the child suggest a work from the North Italian milieu. Provenance: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia. Maria neigt ihr Haupt dem Kind entgegen, das sie zärtlich an die Wange drückt; das Motiv der Maria lactans ist dezent angedeutet. Der architektonische Hintergrund mit klassizistischen Pilastern verweist auf den Formenschatz der Hochrenaissance. Die weich modellierten Inkarnate, das warme Kolorit sowie die fein ausgearbeitete Lockenzeichnung des Kindes sprechen für ein Werk aus norditalienischem Umfeld.
