NARCISSE VIRGILIO DIAZ DE LA PEÑA (Bordeaux 1807–1876 Menton) Venus and Cupid with a butterfly. Oil on panel. 36 × 26.5 cm. Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland. Diaz de la Peña employed this charming subject with Venus, Cupid and a butterfly numerous times in his work (see Pierre and Rolande Miquel: Narcisse Diaz de la Peña (1807–1876). Catalogue raisonné de l`œuvre peint, vol. II, Paris 2006, nos. 2469, 2476, 2525 and 2592). A comparable painting is in the collection of the Hermitage in St Petersburg (inv. no. 8141).
