This portrait of Ché Guevara by René Burri became the iconic picture of the Cuban revolutionary leader; prints of this photograph fetch up to 22.000 Euro at international auctions The black and white photograph 'Ernesto Ché Guevara' was taken by the Swiss photographer René Burri in 1963. In that year Burri was invited to attend an exclusive interview in Ché Guevara's office at the Ministry of Industry in Havana, where this picture was taken. It is one of the most iconic pictures of the Cuban revolutionary who died just four years after this picture was taken. Burri later said that he managed to capture all of Ernesto Ché Guevara's characteristics in his picture series - charm, anger and the ability to convince. The reverse of the gelatin silver print bares the artist's copyright stamp on the reverse '© Rene Burri' and an archive stamp 'Bohemia Archivo' inscribed by hand with 'CHE', as well as it is titled in pencil with 'Ernesto Ché Guevara 1928-1967'. The photograph is in good condition with edge wear and creasing marks, especially in the corners. It is slightly stained on the reverse. The dimensions of the print are 18 x 24 cm. René Burri (b. 1933) René Burri was born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1933. He took his first photograph of a celebrity at the tender age of 13, when he photographed Winston Churchill in Zurich. He studied photography as well as film at the Academy of Arts in Zurich. After his studies he started filming documentaries and took photographs of celebrated architects, artists and politicians. In 1955 Burri became an associate of Magnum Photos. His photographic portrait of Ernesto Ché Guevara is still his most famous photo. A big retrospective of his work was held in 2004-2005 at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris and toured many other European museums. René Burri lives and works in Zurich.
