Francis Bedford (British, 1816-1894), "Constantinople," from the portfolio titled, The Tour of the East, May 21, 1862, albumen print from glass plate negative, inscriptions in mount by Bedford, signed, "F Bedford" and numbered 142 lower right, titled and dated "May 21, 1862" lower left, image/sheet: 9.25"h x 11"w, mount: 17.75"h x 22"w, overall (with mat): 20"h x 24"w. Note: Photographs of the "Tour in the East of H. R. H., the Prince of Wales," Bedford was the first photographer to accompany a royal tour, which led to his most famous commission. Accompanying the Prince of Wales as official photographer on his journey through the Holy Land in 1862. During the tour Bedford took at least two hundred photographs. The Prince of Wales subsequently acquired two sets of the images.
