Lynn Hershman Leeson (b. 1941) Lynn Hershman Leeson was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and is considered one of the groundbreaking artists in the fields of photography, video, film, performance, installation and media art. Leeson started her artistic career in the 1960s, when she drew attention to her new and innovative works considering social issues such as the relationship between man and machine, the relation of the real to the virtual or the construction of identity. Her most famous series of works, ‘Roberta Breitmore’ (1973-1987) shows, for instance, a kind of clone of the artist and deals with topics like cyber-identity, artificial intelligence and reproduction. In her latest works Leeson relates to mass media products like smartphones and scientific developments in the field of genetics. Leeson has been repeatedly awarded with prizes. Exhibitions were held in renowned museums such as the Tate Modern in London. Her works are also part of important collections, including the MoMA in New York, the Walker Art Center and the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum.
