9. Doyle, Sir Arthur Conan. Cabinet photograph of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (6.5 x 4.25 in.; 165 x 108mm), by Newsboy, New York, 1894; light marginal soiling. A rare cabinet photograph of Doyle taken on his first trip to America. Doyle arrived in New York with his brother Innes on 2 October 1894 expecting to lecture on George Meredith and on a series of modern authors. Yet, American audiences and the press clamored to hear all about Sherlock Holmes. Over eight weeks Doyle gave forty public lectures in major cities between Boston and Washington, D.C. and as far west as Milwaukee. The photograph is accompanied by a notecard (2.6 x 3.5 in.; 65 x 87mm), inscribed and signed by Doyle: Yours truly A Conan Doyle. Exhibited: Ever Westward: Arthur Conan Doyle and American Culture. The Houghton Library, Harvard University, 5 May to 8 August 2009. Estimated value: $1,000 - $1,500
