Curtis went to New Mexico many times from 1900 to 1925 photographing the Pueblo, Navajo and Jicarilla Apache. Many ceremonies as the Buffalo Dance at Sia now Zia in 1925 were open to the public. Curtis as was the custom paid his subjects for sitting or here, standing, for portraits.
