Curtis / Photogravure Suffolk Eng Co Boston Curtis wrote about this: The subject is Koyawaima ("gray [dawn] walking"), who has been chief of the fraternity since 1899. This was taken in 1900, on Curtis' first trip to Hopi. He returned many times to photograph the Walpi Snake Dance, making a short film in 1904. The Snake Dance was an internationally media event, attracting 48 photographers in 1898. A number of years later the Hopi prohibited all photography of the ceremony.
