작품 상세

A collection of four tintypes depicting "Wide-Awakes," all approximately 3.25" x 2.25", featuring people carrying the characteristic torches used in their torchlight parades. The Wide Awakes were a Republican organization which sprang up in 1860 to support the presidential campaign of Abraham Lincoln. At their height, they numbered in the hundreds of thousands; opponents often saw them as a quasi-military force. They favored halting the expansion of slavery and defending free labor.
