(LABOR.) Cabinet card portrait of John King, "The Chimney Sweep." Poughkeepsie, NY: C.H. Gallup, photographers, circa 1890 Albumen photograph, 5¼ x 3¾ inches, on original photographer's mount, with lengthy printed caption on verso; minor foxing. The caption explains that "John King, the subject of this photograph, is a familiar sight on the streets of all the Hudson River towns, and even as far as Buffalo. His peculiar song, or call, is original with him, and his powerful baritone can be heard from one end of a street to the other, as he wanders about in pursuit of his avocation." King is depicted in his work clothes.  The melody to the "Song of the Sweep" can be seen faintly in the background. The photographer was active at this 292-294 Main Street address from at least 1886 to 1896.
