(ENTERTAINMENT--MUSIC.) Carl Van Vechten, photographer. Portrait of Billie Holiday. New York, 23 March 1949 Silver print photograph, 9¼ x 6¼ inches, with photographer's embossed stamp and manuscript caption on verso; minimal wear.  After serving ten months in prison on a narcotics conviction, Holiday had her New York City cabaret license revoked, forcing the cancellation of a four-week booking at the Royal Roost. On the day this photo was taken, she was in the city to secure a court order demanding an explanation from the police.
