(CIVIL RIGHTS.) LeRoy Henderson, photographer. Portrait of Fannie Lou Hamer. No place, circa 1970s Gelatin silver print, 11½ x 11 inches, with photographer's inked stamp on verso; cropped on bottom edge, mount remnants on verso. The photographer LeRoy W. Henderson Jr. (born 1936) is known for his work in the civil rights era and affiliation with the Black Arts movement. This portrait is of Mississippi civil rights icon Fannie Lou Hamer (1917-1977), who rose to prominence in 1962. Henderson recalled in a recent message to the consignor: "I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Hamer and photographed her on more than one occasion. . . . I took the photo at Abyssinian Baptist Church. " The portrait is credited to Henderson on the fannielouhamersamerica.com website.   Provenance: acquired by Julia Mary Belafonte (wife of singer Harry Belafonte) from the photographer circa the 1980s, per the photographer's recollection; sold by the estate of Harry Belafonte at Julien's Auctions, 6 March 2025, lot 19.
