(BLACK POWER.) Assata Shakur, et al. Break de Chains. New York: Come! Unity Press, [1973] 23 photocopied pages. Octavo, 8½ x 5½ inches, original illustrated wrappers, minor wear and light crease; unbound. Produced by the National Committee for the Defense of Joanne Chesimard & Clark Squire, it includes messages from the three members of the Black Liberation Army who had been in a shootout with troopers on the New Jersey turnpike in May 1973. Sundiata Hashashim Zayd Acoli (Clark Squire) and Assata Shakur ("slave name jo anne chesimard") both wrote from prison. Zayd Malik Shakur had been killed in the shootout, but an earlier work is included.  Assata Shakur offers an apology of sorts for her actions: "I want to apologize to you, my Black brothers and sisters, for being on the new jersey turnpike. I should have known better. The turnpike is a check point where Black people are stopped, searched, harassed and assaulted. Revolutionaries must never be in too much of a hurry or make careless decisions." She escaped from prison in 1979 and spent her remaining years in Cuba. None traced at auction.
