TADANORI YOKOO (1936- ) HAVING REACHED A CLIMAX AT THE AGE OF 29, I WAS DEAD. 1965. 40 1/2x29 inches, 103x73 3/4 cm. Condition B+ / B: water staining in margins and lower left image; abrasions and darkening at edges. Hand-signed and numbered 13 out of 50 by the artist in blue pen. Silkscreen. Paper. Framed. Yokoo can be credited as the artist who introduced Pop Art to Japan. His earliest work was done in silkscreen, resulting in brighter colors. Yokoo designed this poster for an exhibition entitled Persona at Tokyo's Matsuya department store in November, 1965. The image, commenting as it was on the stifling nature of Japanese society on artists, was shocking, sensational and became an instant classic. It is extremely rare to find posters from Tadanori Yokoo's early career during which his printing runs were short and few were kept.
