AU BAL NEGRE Lithographic Poster (25.5" x 32.25") ; Very Fine+ on Linen; Artwork by Andre-Charles Caron c.1950s Based upon the original poster, designed by Paul Colin, and issued to announce the Bal Negre ("The Black Ball") event in Paris held on February 12, 1927, at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees, which was attended by three thousand Parisians and featured the legendary performer, Josephine Baker. This lithographic poster was designed by Andre-Charles Caron in the 1950s, featuring a minimalist, geometrical, Art Deco-inspired design. This rolled poster was professionally linen-backed without restoration and is in superb condition. Josephine Baker (1906-1975) was an American-born performer who found international fame in France as a dancer, singer, and actress. She became the first Black woman to headline a major motion picture with the 1927 film, "Siren of the Tropics," and rose to stardom in Paris for her daring stage presence, including her iconic banana-skirt performance at the Folies Bergere, embodying the era's Art Deco and African-inspired aesthetics.
