George Jo Mess (Ohio, 1898-1962) "Driftwood" etching Titled lower left and pencil signed lower right. Information on back of frame includes certification and information about the artist from the National Arts Guild. George Jo Mess was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and raised in Indianapolis. His artistic education included time studying at the John Herron Art School, the Louis Tiffany Foundation in New York City, the Modern School of Design in Chicago, and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Mess founded the Circle Art Company in Indianapolis with his brother Gordon, who was also an artist. After Mess' marriage to artist Evelynne Bernloehr the trio also founded the Circle Art Academy. The brothers also started the Circle Engraving Company. Mess taught at Indiana University, the Indianapolis Art League, the John Herron Art School, and other local schools.
