As one of the most important graphic records of Germany of the first third of the 20th Century, these original lithographs document the everyday life of the German population of the time. The lithographs give an insight to the various people, for example circus artists, street singers or gypsies. Other works in this collection show for example the effects of the autumn weather, but most of his imagery concerns the working class. The folder by the renowned German artist who was part of the Berlin Secession is of great artistic value and at the same time a significant record of German history. The 36 original lithographs are each signed in the print in the lower right with „Hans Baluschek". Below, they are signed by hand in pencil "Hans Baluschek". They are inscribed in the lower left with "Originallithographie" (Original Lithograph), they are dated and mostly inscribed „Volk" and numbered „I", „II" or „III" as well numbered with Arabic numerals. They each bear a title in the center. The dimensions of the prints are 25 x 18 cm or in one case 26.5 x 20 cm. The dimensions of the sheets are 38 x 27.5 cm, except for one sheet that measures 38.5 x 30 cm and two others that measure 39 x 28.5 cm. These last three were also printed on thinner paper than the rest. The sheets are all in good or very good condition; some of them show minor discoloration or minimal traces of wear around the margins (especially the three larger and thinner sheets). The lithographs come in a brown folder. Hans Baluschek (1870-1935) Hans Baluschek was born in Breslau in 1870 and moved to Berlin in 1890 where studied at the Royal Academy of Art. The gallery Gurlitt was the first to exhibit his work in 1885 and in 1897 he took part in the Great Art Exhibition Berlin with two works of art. These works established his membership of the Berlin Secession. In 1920 his novel "Enthüllte Seelen" ("Uncovered Souls") was published and made him known as an author as well. In 1924 he was president of the Great Art Exhibition in Berlin. In 1933 the national socialists classify his work as "degenerate art", and he was forced to move out of his studio. Baluschek then retreated to a more private life. He was the teacher of Anna Dräger-Mühlenpfordt and Luise Grimm.
