§ Gwen Raverat (British, 1885-1957) Lions (a design for Cambridge University Music Society), 1934 woodblock h:7 w: 12 cm Provenance: Boughton House Gallery, 98 King Street, Cambridge, 2001, where purchased by the late owner From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood, CBE Gwen Raverat was a highly individual artist who contributed greatly to the revival of wood engraving in the early part of the 20th Century. Her engravings date from 1909; by 1920 she joined her colleagues Eric Gill, Edward Gordon Craig, and Robert Gibbings in founding the Society of Wood Engravers. Gwen Raverat was the grand-daughter of Charles Darwin, author of the Origin of Species and with her work, few were issued in formal editions and all are now rare and highly sought-after.
