Robert Ryman (American, b. 1930) Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Robert Ryman moved to New York in 1952 and took a job as a guard at the Museum of Modern Art. Working there for seven years, Ryman became increasingly interested in the visual arts and began painting. Using a drastically restricted visual vocabulary, Ryman began to create variations on the square and the color white. Described as both Minimalist and Conceptual, Ryman’s works has been exhibited at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, documenta 6 and 7, the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
