etching and engraving, 143 x 184 mm., a good impression, minor spotting, light surface dirt, sheet with thread margins, [Hollstein 46], circa 1657 Provenance: Hellmuth Wallach, New York (according to inscription on reverse) Along with Hollar's etching (see previous lot), the present work stands as one of the most famous of all cat prints. The preparatory drawing for the engraving is recorded as having been sold in an auction in 1883, and the drawing was dated 1657. The current location of the drawing is unknown.
