Camille Graeser (1892-1980) Camille Graeser studied furniture and interior design under the guidance of Bernhard Pankok at the Royal arts school in Stuttgart. From 1915, he worked as a furniture designer in Berlin and became acquainted with Herwarth Walden of the Galerie Sturm. In 1917 he took painting lessons with Adolf Hölzel and opened his own studio for advertising graphics and architecture. In 1918 he joined the Deutsche Werkbund. Around 1920 he developed his early style under the influence of abstract expressionism. Later works give evidence of a strict, two-dimensional form language that was influenced by Oskar Schlemmer and Willi Baumeister. As an architect he was a leading figure of the ‘Neues Bauen’ and the ‘Neues Wohnen’ in southern Germany starting from 1927. At the time of National Socialism, Graeser emigrated to Zurich. In 1937, he joined the group ‘allianz’. After the war, he went over to a strict constructive style. Graeser exhibited his works at the documenta in Kassel, amongst others.
