Condition: The etching in colors is in overall good condition with very occasional, mostly soft creases and a faintly visible pressure mark in the margins and a tiny nick in the lower sheet edge. The plate measures 42.7 x 49.9, the sheet 50 x 69.5 cm. A. R. Penck (born 1939) Born in Dresden in 1939, the painter and sculptor Ralf Winkler adopted several pseudonyms. ‘A. R. Penck’ was the name that followed through and that he is today famous for. He started taking drawing lessons with Strawalde. In the early 1950s, he was trained as an advertising artist. In 1966, he adopted the pseudonym ‘A. R. Penck’. As off 1973, he also signed his works with ‘Mike Hammer’, ‘T. M.’ or ‘Y.’. Whilst his work was under various restrictions in the German Democratic Republic, he received the Will-Grohmann Award from the Academy of Arts in West Berlin in 1975. In 1976, he made the acquaintance of the artist Jörg Immendorff, with whom he collaborated for a few years. In 1980, Penck moved to West Germany. Three years later, he settled in London, and in 1988 he moved to Düsseldorf for a job as a professor for painting at the Academy of Arts. After his retirement in 2003, he settled in Dublin, where he lives and works today. Works by A. R. Penck are on display in major museums collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt/Main, the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. Helge Leiberg (b. 1954) The Dresden painter apprenticed as a positive retoucher and studied at the University of Fine Arts in Dresden in the class of Gerhard Kettner. In 1979, he founded together with Michael Freudenberg and A. R. Penck he founded a painter’s band. In the same year the collaboration with the guitarist Lothar Fiedler began. Leiberg works with the media music, film, dance and visual art. In 1990, he founded the performance group GOKAN, where he increasingly applied the Noise-Painting technique, a life electronic implementation of sign noises into sound, that he had developed himself. His works are for example in the possession of the collections of the Berlinische Galerie, Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, Collection of Prints, Drawings and Photograph Dresden and the Würth Collection. Frank Breidenbruch (born 1963) Born in Wuppertal, Frank Breidenbruch graduated from a three-year stonemason and sculptor training and worked as a freelance sculptor until 1988. He then settled in Carrara, working in the studio Nicoli. That same year he met A.R. Penck for the first time and began an artistic collaboration. From 1989 to 1993, he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Carrara. In 1991, he was a master student of A. R. Penck.
