It is a fairy tale about the inhabitants of a French village, including a sneaky lady who spies the reader through her glasses when opening the book. Chagall's black and white illustrations are expressive and smoothly put on paper. The Suite Provinciale was published in three different editions: 25 copies printed on Japanese paper, 500 on Rives (including the book in the Koopman Collection) and 25 copies outside the trade. This is Number 246/500 on Rives.
