Very Rare 16th c. Original Dutch Woodcut Engraving - THE BEHEADING OF NICOLAS GOSSON AT ATRECHT, c. 1578-1580. Inscribed in Dutch below the image: Nicolnes Gosson, een wys en Vermaard Soelman etc: binnen Atrecht onthalst des nagts: op den 261 October 1578 [Nicolnes Gosson, a wise and famous philosopher etc.: beheaded in Arras at night: on October 261, 1578]. Handwritten on the verso in Dutch: Nicolaus Gosson te Atrecht onthalst 26 Oct. 1578 sumy [tusfehen een en twee uurend] een eleerd Earlman Lon Vermaard RegtsLgeleerde, en Geleero Edelman, 72 years old, die de Stad en het Land veele groote dienste, heeft gedaen. [Nicolaus Gosson beheaded in Arras on 26 Oct. 1578 between one and two o'clock, a learned Earl of Lon, a renowned legal scholar and learned nobleman, 72 years old, who has done much great service to the City and the Country]. Dimensions: Image: 6.5" H x 8.5" W and Sheet: 11" H x 11" W. VG-Excellent Condition. This original woodcut is neither the French (1616) nor Portuguese (1613 - 1615) book plates published later, but a much earlier original c. 1578-1580.
