The Triumph of Marcus Aurelius standing in a horse drawn carriage. Engraving by Nicolas Beatrizet and published by Antoine Lafréry on 1550. This famous print is based on the Roman relief that has been placed in the Palazzo dei Conservatori on the Capitoline in 1515 who emphasized imperial power and authority. Beatrizet gave greater spacial logic and a graded sense of recession to the composition. Vasari was not so fond of the work published by Lafreri but praised Beatrizet's contributions (Michael Bury, 'The Print in Italy 1550-1620', London, 2001, cat.84.). The quadriga of horses is very impressive.
