He was born on January 24, 1923 in Neubistritz (today Nová Bystřice, Czech Republic) and moved to Vienna with his family in 1926. From 1946 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, including as a master student of Fritz Wotruba, and later turned to painting. Swoboda was a member of the Art Club and the Vienna Secession. He presented his works in numerous exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale (1950, 1954) and the São Paulo Biennale (1952). Swoboda's art can be assigned to the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, which is characterized by poetic-magical imagery. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. One of his important public works is the mosaic “Nursing” at the Fleminghof in Vienna. Swoboda died on July 11, 1974 in Vienna.
