Date: 18th century Description: Fine-line copper engraving of the Temple of Antoninus Pius and Faustina, one of the best-preserved buildings in the Roman Forum in Rome. The idealised front view shows the classically proportioned temple with a high podium, a six-column Corinthian colonnade and a richly decorated pediment with a figurative acroterion. The Latin inscription on the architrave "Divo Antonino et Divae Faustinae Ex S.C." refers to the deification of the imperial couple. In the foreground, lively staffage figures lend the sheet scale and scenic quality. The engraving is typical of the archaeological-antiquarian vedute works of the 18th century, which served to represent Roman architecture and the educational journey of the Grand Tour.
